Introducing: Lo-Fi Bitches

You know you've found a great release when efforts to write about it are constantly interrupted by headbanging. The new full-length by Lo-Fi Bitches is one such example. These Israel-natives have been putting out singles on the numerous but superb Shax Trax compilations for a while now but this collection of many previously unheard tracks is a real brain melter. In the decent list of impressive LPs this year (Justice, ZZT, Jan Driver, SebastiAn, Slice & Soda), Asylum is unquestionably 2011's underground hit for me. I'm going to stop writing so that you'll stop reading. Go listen. Right meow.

Normally I tend to go for music with lots of teeth (angry music is my daily exorcism) but in the case of Nadastrom's juicy new EP I'll be happy to make an exception. Going a little bit towards the darker side their newest effort is an instant-like with plenty of grimy elements and some ominous undertones to satisfy your inner demon. Much love to Scion A/V for another great release. Oh and by the way, it's kinda free. Word.

Label Spotlight: Mako Records

The balance of both consistency and surprise is a hard one to keep but Mako seems to have a perfect handle on it with each new release. What isn't a surprise of course is the quality that a label run by Proxy himself would attract and they are quickly becoming a go-to source for those seeking the best in today's techno.

One of their newest products is an EP from GMOROZOV who, while no stranger to the scene, has been overdue for a release of this magnitude. The title track and Acid are a tie for me. You decide.

We have such sounds to show you...

"Heavy" is a term that is abused often within the dance music community. With vanilla being packaged in dark German chocolate wrappers, there are musical taste buds being constantly deprived of something truly intense.

Now I can understand that music is to be picked appropriately for the particular crowd but in my experience sometimes an unexpected sledgehammer to a college-aged face can yield some surprisingly great results. In the same way that most people think Saw is the most disturbing movie ever (watch the August Underground series and then get back to me), the audience is always ripe for something under-the-radar that cuts deeper into the flesh.

And speaking of flesh, let me introduce you to some guys that aren't happy until there are guts on the dance floor: Gör FLsh.

These two Quebec metalheads have been releasing some of the most mosh-worthy tracks ever to hit the clubs and with Halloween approaching, now is the perfect time for some CDJ-delivered bloodshed.

Unspoiled Meat: Vol. 1

Every year I seem to accumulate a pile of hidden gems in my collection that for whatever reason don't end up seeing much light of day in terms of internet exposure. In the spirit of being better late than never, this series will pay belated tribute to some seriously under-appreciated, ass-moving potential.

Let me start off with a track by The Flexican and Bassjackers that features a beautiful build using a romantically sorrowful vocal (think Silencio from Mulholland Dr.) into a loin-tingling drop.

Not that most of you haven't heard of ZZT (Tiga + Zombie Nation) but this turbo-charged (no pun intended) remix by Marseille just may have escaped your notice. P.S. - His monthly mixtape series is also well worth your attention.

Although this now seemingly defunct Toronto duo known as Mekka Mekka only released a few productions, the ones that made it out really cooked. Minimal yet aggressive, I sometimes have a hard time placing their sound in my playlists. You want underrated? Here it is.

My appreciation for Johnny Love is no secret to those who know me. The man behind Deathface and 1/2 of the deceased Guns n' Bombs has been a major talent in the dance world long before electro became a household name. In this particular project his blender has been chocked full of rave, Cumbia, tropical, and bass whilst being firmly locked in the liquify position. To my ears he is the de facto DJ standard in creating styles rather than following trends.

Flammenwerfer emerged onto the LA scene not too long ago but it's clear that he will undoubtedly be making a name for himself in the future. Amidst a sea of stateside dubstep and electro his techno vibe is a welcomed change for another US producer. And to top it off the tracks he's released so far are free. Go get them. Now.

Closing things out with another take-no-prisoners freebie is a more recent track by the Mexican artist known as Cunha. I've been seriously impressed with Mexico's heavier dance scene that has been emerging the past year or so (more of them to come) and it leads me to believe that our parties by comparison probably look like make-believe tea parties with a baby sister. Keep it up, guys.

And now for some beautiful nightmares...

With this being my first post on this delightful blog I was contemplating a personal introduction but then realized that it would probably cause people to instantly stop reading. You’re still here so let me say that my name is Beau Cauchemar and I will undoubtedly be the chart-hating musical black sheep of this talented collective.

To start things off with an explosion (never mind a bang) there is one particular name that comes to mind: Dave Scorp. This 24-year-old Hungarian instantly caught my attention with his brutal remix of the already-heavy “Razor” by Q.G. While not the most complex of tracks it certainly shines when the tool you need is a hammer. He has since continued to impress with a dance-turned-mosh sound that shows no signs of letting up or slowing down. There’s more insanity on his Soundcloud so be sure to hit the follow button if you worship distortion. Enjoy, destroy.
