Treasures found in your own backyard!

As you are well aware, We here at Penned Madness are a dance and music blog - trying to bring to light some great music and lesser known artists from all over the globe.
We are though a Florida-centric blog as well, our mission being to promote the thriving Florida music scene here.
That being the case, today's post is going to be about some local flavor across the state. Every now and again, we need to drop some knowledge about some of our friends from around the peninsula.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starting off, we have a track from Pauly Crush of Orlando. Voted recently as Orlando's #1 DJ, Pauly Crush has been throwing parties across Central Florida for a number of years now. The most successful of these Crush @ Backbooth in Orlando on Monday nights, PULP @ Czar in Ybor on Friday nights and the former Saturday/Thursday party @ Firestone in Orlando on Thursday nights. Rumor has it that Mr. Crush has other parties in other cities in the works over the next year or so, we eagerly await any news on those developments.

Accompanying Pauly on many of his party nights throught the years is Miss Fit of Orlando. As you know, Miss Fit is one of the writers and the editor of fellow dance junkie music blog, Glitter and Gold dot Net. Below is a mash-up that Miss Fit posted a bit ago, though she writes that it is not finished, we think it's a pretty decent mix at this point.

Miss Fit - I Got it from my Momma Mashup.mp3

Tallahassee's very own electronic dance experience, Keepbullfighting, is playing their farewell show this weekend in town. As is the nature of college towns, Al and Forrest - the masterminds behind Keepbullfighting - are moving away to pursue their dreams of playing keyboard driven 8-bit victory dance music for others. We wish them the best in all their endeavors and for those that wish to see this boys off, Saturday the 26th at the OAF house (521 Conradi) in Tallahassee will be their final show.

Keepbullfighting - Creature.mp3 (quality rather poor due to downloading from myspace, my b -M)

And to end this post off right, I leave you with a mix from our very own James C aka "Party McFly". James finished this mix a couple of weeks ago, but due to fuckshit, I haven't had a chance to post it up yet.
Seriously though, his alias is no lie - James is the future decedent of reluctant time-traveling hero Marty McFly. At first James had dismissed the bedtime stories of his grandfathers' trips across time as the ramblings of an old coot, until on his deathbed did Marty's claims display their seriousness. As death came for him, Marty snatched hold of his crying grandson's hand and professed, "Don't be sad kiddo... where I am going, I won't need roads..."
Just then the door flew open and there stood James' uncles, renowned scientists and space blacksmiths, Jules and Verne Brown. They explained to James that he must come with them that instant, that the past was in danger. Striving for an explanation, his uncles responded with "It's the Kids James...something's gotta be done about the Kids!"
James glanced one last time at his dying grandfather as the uncles hurried the young boy out of the room. One last "Whoa....that's heavy," trailed out of the corners of Marty's mouth as he took his last breathe. Since that fateful day, James has lived among us in the past. Not knowing the true nature of what he must change, only that it involves kick-ass partying and bringing us killer music.

Party McFly - White Guilt 2 28:48 (zshare)

Greatful days - Ayumi Hamasaki (ParaOne Remix)
Cryptic - Pin Me DOwn (Phones Materialization Remix)
We Are... - Just a Band (The Shoes Remix)
Trust Tissue - I Scream Ice Cream
Going Nowhere - Cut Copy (Digialism Remix)
Covers Break - DJ Kue
Minuteman's Pulse - Mr. Oizo
MIA-roder - A-Track
Lick Shots - Missy Elliot (Chew Fu Fix)
Ready or Not - Party Crashers Unite

Tuesday Mixtape Madness!!

So just like every other Music Blog out there, we at Penned Madness are going to try our hand at a special weekly theme. So for now, we're going to experiment with the concept of Tuesday Mixtape Madness...Madness...Madness...Madness...

So I have decided to dip into the well and use some of my fellow bloggers and DJ friend's recent additions to the mixtape universe. But I have also included two mixes from some more well known DJs as well, those are at the end... Till then...

First off we have Estrange from Orlando.

Estrange, Evan, works with the cats from Crush at Backbooth in Orlando and Pulp in Tampa, he was also former host of the recently bastardized Saturday/Thursday at Firestone in Orlando. He has been my boy for years and years, we grew up in the same shit hole of Brevard County Florida and killed way too many brain cells together over those years. But we both made it out so things are good now. Besides being awesome, Estrange is also a DnB and Jungle junkie, he's newest mix will quote: "Have you movin, shakin, and dancin all up in this bitch!"

Listen to this shit, he is insane:
Hella Hyphy 2
Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (Kissy Sell Outs Six Different Ways)
Aeph - Leave Me Alone
Shinichi Osawa - Electro411 (Lies In Disguise Remix)
Telematrik - Exit Civilisation
Surki - White Knight Two
Dieselboy-Load_Rocket_(Gridlok_remix)
COMPUTER CLUB - Load Rocket
Danny Byrd - Weird Science
Shitdisco - 72 Virgins (Bloody Beetroots Remix)
Blame - Stay Forever

A summer mix-up from Glitter and Gold's queen, Miss Fit.

Miss Fit runs the popular music blog community of Glitter and Gold with the help of a few other cats. Don't listen to what Defame: Orlando says, it is a great blog and the people working it have their shit together. The Dude or Not-Dude of Defame is just pissed at the Orlando scene nowadays and is hating on anyone they can find, I have a feeling that this mystery person probably helped create most of the madness in Downtown Orlando at some point and just feels left out now. Anyways, besides running that biz, Miss Fit is also one of the resident DJ cats I mentioned before from Crush at Backbooth in Orlando and Pulp in Tampa, she was also a resident DJ of the again, recently bastardized Saturday/Thursday at Firestone in Orlando. Here's her mix for all you chillin' by the pool.

Get your shit started right, with The Summer Kick-Off Mix

And then there's this guy, DJ Mannes

I put this mix together yesterday to give to Mike from Mad Happy when they played a show here in Tallahassee at All Saint's Cafe. If you haven't heard these guys, I highly suggest checking out their MySpace. They are fun, positive, great beat makers and all around great people. Anyways, my mix is definitely sloppier than Phillip's or Evan's - kinda just threw mine together. I only did it in one take, and that is not to imply I'm a better DJ - "Good Ole One Take Manley" - not at all; just that I made a few mistakes, but hey, what are you gonna do. and yes, I do read Palms Out too much... Here it is, sloppy at times but I hope you dig it.

Kickin' It with DJ Mannes:
Ben E. King - Stand By Me (Chew Fu ft Steve Clisby Big Room Fix)
The Yardbirds - For Your Love (Ursula 1000 Re-Think)
The Shangri-Las - Leader of the Pack (DJ Kue Remix)
Bryan Cox - Let's Go To Work (B.Rich Remix)
MSTRKRFT - Bounce (OH SNAP!! Bootleg Vocal Remix)
INXS - Need U Tonight (Jon Gill's One Of My Kind Mix)
Dizzee Rascal - Pussy'ole (Aaron LaCrate & Debonair Samir Gutter Mix)
Rage Against The Machine - Bulls On Parade (DJ Kue Remix)
Rye Rye - Wassup (Crookers Remix)
Pittsburgh Slim - Too Bad You're With Him (Pink is Punk Remix)
HEARTSREVOLUTION - C.Y.O.A (AC Slater Remix)

Your Mom's Favorite DJ Indeed...

Today, I spent some of my afternoon listen to WPRK 91.5FM, in ye olde Winter Park Florida. WPRK is the radio station of Rollins College, a private college local in the heart of Winter Park, and is, presumably, college owned and operated. They attest to being the "Best in Basement Radio," a scientific claim that has not been tested, and pride themselves on being a source for "independent" in the Orlando/Winter Park area.

This said afternoon, WPRK happen to have a guess on their show; Orlando spinstress, Miss Fit...

After to listen to her set, and the news about the launch of the infamous the GlitterandGold.net, WPRK were giving away tickets to an upcoming Kid Koala show at The Social.

Being at full stoked potential upon hearing this news, I call up the station lightning quick.

and now I'm gonna go see Kid Koala for FREE, on the 6th of May...

Quite exciting really... for me anyways. Kid Koala is nothing but inspiration to me, a true genius really. If I could be a quarter of the artist he is, I will die a happy DJ. Here's an example of true glory, a little diddy called "The Drunken Trumpet..."

When Mr. Koala came through Tallahassee a few years ago, he recorded this 'song' as well as a whole set live in our own radio studio - WVFS Tallahassee 89.7FM.

Kid Koala - LIVE AT V89 - track 06.mp3 (zshare)

But that's not the only why I am excited about the show, I am excited cause I get to go back to Orlando, even if it is just for a day or so. The Orlando scene feels like some girl I dated so long ago, a relationship you have to stop and think about and say to yourself, "Oh yeah, we did fool around didn't we....weird."

Now, since moving back to Tallahassee some two years ago, I kinda sorta lost touch with the Orlando dance scene. Before the trek up north, I would drive my happy ass out to I-Bar (with my van full of people) all the way from Merritt Island, each and every Thursday night. We would have to due to our hometown; you see, Merritt Island - and Brevard in general - is one canine short of a "Dog and Pony" town. It is exactly like the town in "Footloose," the only difference being that dancing isn't banned, just boring...

That being said, I would make it a point to get out and dance it up each and every chance I got. And trips to Orlando provided me just the hit I needed. I really enjoyed these times and mentally refer to them often. Then Tallahassee came along, and it turned into a different game for me (I didn't just want to dance, but make people dance).

meanwhile...

Times began to change in the Orlando scene...the city grew one. Before it was skinny white kids with stupid hair dancing at I-Bar, now it's skinny white kids with stupid hair dancing at I-Bar and Backbooth and Firestone and Suite B and so many other places. It's a scene I am eager to get back involved with, and hopefully in the next couple of months those plans will come to fruition.

Until then... I have Tallahassee times and this Kid Koala show to look forward to...
